Mooo-ve Over Cows, We Can Make Our Own (Nut) Milk!

Updated: Aug 20, 2021

While I believe a good cup of raw cow milk is the best option when looking for an alternative to the traditional carton of overly processed grocery store cow milk, non-dairy "milk" options are increasing in popularity. Fortunately, and unfortunately, with popularity comes demand, and with demand comes supply. The supply of ready-made, plant-based milks is dizzying. A glance in the cooler will leave you wondering what CAN'T be made into a "milk," and a glance at the ingredient list will leave you wondering exactly what you're paying for. More often than not, you're paying for a few cents worth of substance and the bulk of your hard-earned dollars on water. In fact, according to Mercola.com in this article about almond milk,

  • Most almond milk contains hardly any almonds, mostly water, added sugars, and a smattering of vitamins for good measure

  • Almonds made up just 2 percent of one almond-milk beverage tested

  • A carton of almond milk may contain about 39 cents worth of almonds and sell for $3.99

Also worth noting, plant-based does not always equal healthy. The majority of store-bought plant-based milks are heavily genetically modified and filled with glyphosate, unfermented soy, arsenic, synthetic vitamins, sugars, and more. If you are looking for a non-dairy alternative to milk but don't want to drink an expensive chemical concoction, simply control the narrative and make your own!

We have a few avoiding dairy in our house, so we make our almond milk frequently! We always soak our almonds first, which you can learn more about here. Follow this picture recipe for instructions on how we make it...

At a glance...

  1. Soak 3/4 to 1 cup of raw almonds for 8 hours in salted water

  2. Discard soaking water and rinse almonds

  3. Add almonds to half a blender of filtered water along with 1/2 tsp sea salt, 2-4 dates, and 1 tsp of pure vanilla

  4. Blend on high for at least 20 seconds, then turn down to low and top off with more filtered water to equal 8 cups total (if you fill the blender to the top in the beginning, you're going to make quite a mess!)

  5. Wash your hands for 20 seconds

  6. Pour blended mixture into a fine mesh nut bag

  7. Massage "milk" from the pulp into a separate container

  8. Pour into a clean container and enjoy within a week!

  9. TIP: Shake before drinking as contents will separate
