That's a Nice Load of Toxins You Got There...

Everyday we are making small but consequently huge decisions that affect our lives and the lives of our loved ones.
The toxic load we carry today is astronomical. Toxic load refers to the accumulation of toxins and chemicals in our bodies that we ingest from a variety of sources, including the environment, the food we eat, the water we drink, and the personal care and household products we use.
Our babies are being born pre-polluted with toxic chemicals and are absorbing them from day one through breast milk. We continue the chemical exposure daily through common consumer products, including household products, beauty products and home materials (i.e. flooring). Individually, the toxic burden of these everyday products seem mundane and inconsequential, but the cumulative affect is truly devastating. The constant and long-term exposure to these everyday products are associated with health hazards such as cancer, autism, neurocognitive disorders, mental health issues, and autoimmune diseases like Crohn’s, colitis, arthritis and lupus.
The good news is we do have control over how many toxins we accumulate. For one thing, our bodies have four major organs responsible for clearing out toxins: the skin, kidneys, colon, and liver. By optimizing the health of these organs, it can help filter out the toxins effectively.
Our greatest tool, however, is our purchasing power. We are the gatekeepers to our homes and bodies and we decide what gets in. We decide when enough is enough and we say no to the accepted norms. We decide when to call bs on the claims that our health is not being affected.
The average woman puts almost 200 chemicals per day on her body, with 80 of these being from the soaps, shampoos, deodorants, toothpastes, mouth washes, cleansers, toners, beauty serums and masks, lotions, make-up, perfumes, and hairsprays she is using even before breakfast. (CDC 2003, Thornton et al. 2002, EWG 2003.) Thank goodness we have our skin, the largest organ of our bodies, to act as a barrier against this toxic bombardment, right? Wrong! Our skin is a CARRIER, not a BARRIER. It is believed that our skin absorbs 60-70% of any topical products we use. That is 60-70% of the chemicals in our products we use EVERY SINGLE DAY absorbing directly into our blood streams and circulating through our organs. What’s even worse is children absorb 40-50% more than adults!
Which chemicals am I talking about? Let’s take a look at some very common toxic substances that are found in most commercial cosmetics. Chances are, these things are in your makeup bag right now! Do me a favor and take out your smart phones right now (yes, I’m inviting you to be on your phone while I’m presenting) and download the Think Dirty app. Start searching for your favorite cosmetic brands, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, etc, and be prepared to be appalled and downright angry. Then find the closest trashcan when you get home.

Now go break those bonds and live unbound!
