You Are What You Eat...Including Pesticides

Updated: Sep 7, 2021

My little sneak :) That’s okay, they’re all washed up. Why am I washing my fruits and veggies, you ask? (Especially those oranges...don’t you peel those??) Because of that familiar #lifelesson, “You are what you eat.” My dear girlfriend just shared about this (I love my friends), but our cells are in a constant state of rebuilding, meaning our bodies are in a constant state of rebuilding. What do our 37,200,000,000,000 cells use to rebuild? The nutrients we give them! If we give them junk, they rebuild with junk, and we become junk (sorry, harsh?)

Fueling our cells with organic fruits and veggies is an amazing start to building super-cells (#livingfoodforalivingbody), but #pesticides. Pesticides are DESIGNED to kill life; that’s what keeps the bugs and critters away from crops. But...we are alive...and pesticides are found on nearly 70% of the fruits and veggies we eat today, according to the Environmental Working Group. (Want some scary? This number jumps to 90% for spinach, kale, strawberries, nectarines, and apples.) Normal, day-to-day exposure to pesticides is linked to human health effects such as endocrine disruption, immune suppression, hormone disruption, diminished intelligence, reproductive abnormalities, and cancer, to name just a few. (Brouwer et al., 1999; Crisp et al., 1998; Hurley et al., 1998)

Good news, by simply washing our fruits and veggies, ALL of our fruits and veggies, we can greatly reduce our pesticide exposure! I love to soak mine in some Thieves Fruit and Veggie Soak, which uses the power of essential oils to effectively, yet naturally, rid my produce of the all the unwanted lurkers, including toxic pesticides.

What else can you do to limit your exposure? Buying or growing organic produce is huge, but I know everyone’s budget is in a different place. We have personally sacrificed and shifted a larger portion of our budget to our #livingfoodforalivingbody bill, but I focus on two lists when the budget is a little tight. The “Dirty Dozen” is a list of foods with the most pesticides and ones where you should try to concentrate your money. The “Clean Fifteen” is a list of foods with few detected pesticides on them, mostly because they are foods you peel or eat the insides of only. If have to skimp, skimp here. You can request the handy lists pictured above to bring with you to the grocery store from the Environmental Working Group website (ewg.org)

So, why clean my oranges? I don’t know your style, but I start peeling my oranges by taking a big bite out of the peel. I don’t want a big bite o’ pesticides, so I give them a good soak before eating ;)
